1997-P Proof American Silver Eagle

in Proof Silver Eagles

The 1997-P Proof American Silver Eagle was issued by the United States Mint as the twelfth annual release in a series. Demand for the strike was relatively light during the year with the effect that the final mintage ended up being the third lowest in the series of the standard Proof Silver Eagles (not including special releases).

Of interest, 5,000 of the 1997-P Proof American Silver Eagles were sold as part of the special Impressions of Liberty Set. The set was issued by the United States Mint as part of the launch of the related Platinum Silver Eagle that year and contained one Proof American Platinum Eagle, one Proof American Gold Eagle and one Proof American Silver Eagle – all in the one ounce size. The set sold for $1,499.00 and sold out.

Back to the Proof American Silver Eagle, it featured the same basic specifications and designs as it had in previous releases (which are still the same today). This includes being struck from one ounce of .999 fine silver to a diameter of 40.60mm.

Shown on the obverse of the coin is a depiction of "Walking Liberty" as originally designed by Adolph A. Weinman for the 1916-1947 half dollar coin. The design has come to be a favorite of collectors with many even considering it to be one of the most beautiful ever struck on an American coin.

The reverse shows a heraldic eagle with shield design. It was created originally for the Silver Eagles by US Mint engraver John Mercanti.

Just like the previous few annual releases, the 1997 Proof Silver Eagle was struck at the US Mint’s facility in Philadelphia. That fact is indicated by the inclusion of a ‘P’ mintmark on the reverse of the coin just to the lower left of the eagle design.

1997 Silver Eagle Mintages

The mintage of the 1997-P Proof American Silver Eagle was relatively low for the series coming in at only 435,350. That mintage is low enough to qualify the strike as being the third lowest in the series for regular Proof Silver Eagle issues coming in only behind 1993 and 1994.

Demand for the related bullion Silver Eagles actually rose during the year with the US Mint recording a total of 4,295,004 of the 1997 year-dated strikes sold. This was up 691,618 from the previous year. The average London Fix for Silver for the year was $4.91 an ounce.
