Fifteen years of Proof American Silver Eagle releases was marked by the United States Mint with appearance of the 2000-P Proof American Silver Eagle. The new strike continued the series which dates back to 1986 when the inaugural strikes of the series debuted.

Like previous releases (as well as those of today), the 2000 Proof Silver Eagle was composed of one ounce of .999 fine silver with the small balance of copper. The strikes feature a diameter of 40.60 mm and a thickness of 2.98mm.

Each 31.101 gram coin was issued by the US Mint as the numismatic version of the related bullion Silver Eagles. In fact, the proof and bullion Silver Eagles feature similar specifications aside from their finish, mintmark and intended markets.

The bullion coins, obviously, feature a bullion finish whereas the proof coins feature a proof finish which is typically much more detailed than the bullion strikes and features frosted devices and a mirror-like field. The US Mint creates the finish by using specially burnished blanks struck multiple times with special dies.

Bullion coins from the US Mint do not carry a mintmark. In contrast, the Proof Silver Eagles of 2000 have a ‘P’ mintmark located on the reverse design just to the bottom left of the eagle. The ‘P’ indicates the coin was struck at the US Mint’s facility in Philadelphia. This same facility had been responsible for striking the standard Proof Silver Eagles since 1993.

Finally, bullion coins are minted for investors and sold through a network of authorized purchasers for a small premium above the current spot price of the silver contained within them. The Proof Silver Eagles are struck for collectors and sold directly to the public by the US Mint for a much larger premium over and above any associated melt value.

2000 Silver Eagle Mintages

For comparison, the US Mint recorded a total of 549,330 sold the previous year. Each 2000 Proof Silver Eagle was sold from the US Mint for $24.00.

Bullion Silver Eagle demand also rose significantly in 2000. The US Mint lists the total number of year-dated bullion Eagles sold at 9,239,132. This was a large jump over the 7,408,640 sold the previous year. Of interest, the average London Fix for Silver for the year was $4.95 an ounce.
