2004 American Silver Eagles

in Silver Eagles Information

2004 American Silver Eagles proved to be a year of growth for the strikes with both the proof and bullion versions of the coin turning out numbers higher than shown the previous year.

For the 2004-dated bullion coins, the US Mint indicates that a total of 8,882,754 were sold. This was a respectable increase of 387,746 over the previous year or up 4.6%.

The number was enough for the strikes to beat out the previous year as the fifth best year ever to that point for the bullion coins. Still coming in at higher sales were the first full year in which the strikes were available – 1987, as well as 2002, 2000 and 2001 – in that order.

Bullion coins may have continued to sell well in the year due to the increase seen in the silver markets. For the year, the average cost of an ounce of the precious metal came in at $6.67. This compares to the previous year when silver averaged only $4.88. This equated to an increase of $1.79 an ounce or up 37%.

The precious metal started of well enough in January of that year with a peak occurring at the $6.65 an ounce level. Prices increased for the next few months before dropping drastically to $5.83 average for the month of May. The silver price rebounded and by December even topped out at $8.04 an ounce one day.

Below is a table showing the monthly totals for bullion coins sold (this table reflects only the total number of coins sold each month and may include strikes minted in other years):
