Marking the twenty-first year of issues in the series as well as the twentieth anniversary for the program, the United States Mint released the 2006-W Proof American Silver Eagle. Mintage for the individual proof coin continued a climb that had started three years earlier.

Collectors also scrambled that year to obtain the special 20th Anniversary American Silver Eagle Set. This special set included one standard 2006-W Proof American Silver Eagle along with the newly introduced 2006-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle and a special 2006-P Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle.

All three varieties continued the series which dates back to 1986 and were struck to the same basic specifications and included the same designs with only their finish being different. As such, each was composed of one ounce of .999 fine silver and featured a diameter of 40.60mm.

On the obverse, a depiction of "Walking Liberty" is shown by artist Adolph A. Weinman. This design was originally featured on the 1916-1947 half dollar coin and has become a favorite of collectors. Many even consider the design to be one of the most beautiful ever struck on an American coin.

The reverse of each Silver Eagle shows a heraldic eagle with shield design. It was completed by US Mint engraver John Mercanti.

The standard Proof Silver Eagle for the year was struck at the US Mint’s facility in West Point. This location had been striking the Silver Eagles since 2001.
