2007-W Proof American Silver Eagle

in Proof Silver Eagles

Appearing as the twenty-second annual release in the Proof Silver Eagle series was the 2007-W Proof American Silver Eagle. This coin, like all of its predecessors, was struck from one ounce of .999 fine silver and featured a diameter of 40.60mm.

Demand for the coin fell slightly from the previous year. However, the mintage was still high enough to qualify the 2007 Proof Silver Eagle as having the fourth highest mintage in the series to that point.

The coin was struck at the US Mint’s facility in West Point. That location had been responsible for striking the standard Proof Silver Eagles since 2001 when it assumed the responsibility from the Philadelphia facility. Philadelphia had taken over production in 1993 from the San Francisco facility who originally struck the coins since the series debut in 1986.

A ‘W’ mintmark is found on the reverse of the coins. This indicates the West Point production.

Since their debut twenty-plus years earlier (and still true today), the obverse of each Silver Eagle showcases an image of "Walking Liberty." The design was originally completed by artist Adolph A. Weinman for the 1916-1947 half dollar coin and is considered one of the most beautiful designs ever struck on an American coin.

The reverse of coins in the series shows a heraldic eagle with shield design. It is the work of US Mint engraver John Mercanti.

2007 Proof Silver Eagle Mintages

As previously stated, the 2007-W Proof American Silver Eagles saw demand decline but still came in with a very respectable mintage of 821,759. This was down from the 843,602 individual Proof Silver Eagles sold in 2006 (of which an additional 248,875 were sold as part of the special 20th Anniversary American Silver Eagle Set.) The US Mint sold each Proof Silver Eagle in 2007 for $29.95, a $2 increase from previous years.

Bullion Silver Eagle demand also fell slightly in 2007 with the US Mint recording a total of 9,028,036 sold. This was a drop of 1,648,486 from the previous year. The average London Fix for Silver for 2007 came in at $13.38 – an increase of $1.83 from the previous year.
