2011-S Uncirculated American Silver Eagle

in Uncirculated Silver Eagles

The 2011-S Uncirculated American Silver Eagle was a special Silver Eagle struck by the United States Mint and only issued as part of the 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set. As such, the mintage for the coin was limited to the mintage of the set at just 100,000.

Each coin was nearly identical to the standard 2011-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle released by the US Mint both individually as well as part of the 25th Anniversary Set. The only noticeable difference between the two Uncirculated Silver Eagles was the mintmark indicating which facility struck the coin.

An ‘S’ mintmark on the reverse of this coin indicated it was struck at the US Mint’s facility in San Francisco. A ‘W’ mintmark on the standard Uncirculated Silver Eagle indicated it was struck at the US Mint’s facility in West Point.

At a mintage of just 100,000, this 2011-S Eagle is considered one of the key date coins of the series. It’s mintage is met exactly at 100,000 by the 2011-P Reverse Proof Silver Eagle also sold as part of the 25th Anniversary Set. This number, however, is significantly higher than the 1995-W Proof American Silver Eagle which had a mintage of just 30,125.

Collectors scrambled to obtain the 25th Anniversary Set (in which this coin was found) when first issued. Owing to the low mintage, the set sold out in just four and half hours from the US Mint after collectors had crashed the Mint’s website and caused significant issues with the telephone ordering system.

Shown on the obverse of the coin (as well as all Silver Eagles) is "Walking Liberty" as designed by Adolph A. Weinman. It was first seen on the 1916-1947 half dollar coin and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful ever struck on an American coin. The reverse shows US Mint engraver John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle with shield design.

All Silver Eagles are struck from one ounce of .999 fine silver to a diameter of 40.60 mm.
