in American Silver Eagle News

Prices were reduced Tuesday, December 27, for the 2011-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle and other numismatic silver coins offered by the United States Mint. The collector coin went from $50.95 to $45.95 for a $5 reduction.

This year’s uncirculated American Silver Eagle has had it price lowered twice, first on October 7, 2011 and then again on Tuesday. Both cuts were precipitated by a harsh fall in precious metals. The first when silver plunged from above $40 an ounce toward $30 and this latest time as the white metal hung around the $27 mark. When the uncirculated Eagle was first released on September 15, 2011, the United States Mint had them priced at $60.45, or $14.50 more than now.

On Tuesday, weekly United States Mint sales figures for the uncirculated coin had shown their mintages grew by 3,173 to 225,402. Added with the 100,000 2011-S Uncirculated American Silver Eagles offered in the 25th Anniversary American Silver Eagle Set and collectors have scooped up more than 325,000 of the type. 535,598 had been purchased when the coin was last issued in 2008. Also lowered in price were four America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coins. The issues honoring Olympic National Park, Glacier National Park, Gettysburg National Military Park and Mount Hood National Forest went from $229.95 to $204.95 for a $25 reduction. It was also the second price cut for the five ounce pieces. The original issues had launched at a price of $279.95.

In related news, sales of the bullion American Silver Eagle have slowed extensively. December sales are currently at 2,009,000, but more than 1.8 million of that total had been rung in by mid-month. The amount is higher than November’s lowly 1.384 million but also well off the all-time monthly record set in January 2011 at 6.422 million.
