2012-S American Silver Eagle Set Over 85,000, 2012-W Proof Sales Top 400,000

in American Silver Eagle News

Sales got off to a quick one-day start of 85,341 for the 2012-S American Silver Eagle San Francisco Proof Set that was released June 7, 2012, and the individually sold 2012-W Proof American Silver Eagle on Monday topped the 400,000 milestone at 404,985 since its release on April 12, 2012.

Together, the two United States Mint sold products account for three of at least four American Silver Eagles that are minted in 2012 especially for coin collectors. In a typical year, there are two at most, with both being struck at the U.S. Mint facility in West Point and sold individually — the annual proof and the annual uncirculated.

The U.S. Mint’s decision to offer a unique American Silver Eagle set this year brings an interesting dynamic as collectors must either fork over more money to add to their Eagle collection or stand pat. The proof set costs $149.95 and it contains:

  • 2012-S Proof American Silver Eagle, and a
  • 2012-S Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle

The price equates to $75 per coin whereas the standard annual offering described above is available for $59.95.

Then let’s not forget the uncirculated version of the coin which is scheduled for release later this year — the 2012-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle. Its expected price of $45.95 adds another cost factor for collectors to consider when it is released on August 2, 2012.

Also atypical for a year, last year’s series of releases added expenses to collectors’ pocket books as well. The United States Mint sold 850,000 of the individual proofs, 100,000 of it 25th Anniversary sets and it continues to offer its uncirculated Eagle with sales now at 290,277. (See latest sales here.)

The older Eagle, the new San Francisco set and the standalone proof Eagle may be found for sale on the United States Mint web site at http://www/usmint.gov/catalog or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
