One of the special Silver Eagles slated to be issued by the United States Mint in 2012 is the 2012-S Proof American Silver Eagle. The coin will appear as part of the 2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Set scheduled to be released by the US Mint on June 7, 2012.

The coin is unique for the fact that it is struck at the US Mint’s facility in San Francisco. Standard Proof Silver Eagle production is handled by the US Mint’s facility in West Point. However, the San Francisco Mint has a long history of Eagle production.

It actually started producing the Proof Silver Eagles with the series debut in 1986. Proof Eagles were produced there through 1992 when the duties were handed to other locations. Other versions of the Silver Eagle have also been struck in San Francisco with Bullion Eagles and Uncirculated Eagles being minted in 2011.

The choice of San Francisco to mint the two Eagle coins included in a special set in 2012 is also based in history. The current location of the San Francisco Mint opened in 1937 making 2012 the 75th anniversary of operations at that facility.

Designs and specifications for the 2012-S Proof Eagle will be identical to previous releases including a composition of one ounce of .999 fine silver. All Silver Eagles since their debut have featured Adolph A. Weinman’s "Walking Liberty" design first featured on the 1916-1947 half dollar coin. The reverse design shows US Mint Engraver John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle with shield.

Past special Silver Eagle Sets have proved extremely popular with collectors. The 25th Anniversary American Silver Eagle Set issued in 2011 sold out within four and a half hours of availability.
